College/Career Center

What is the LMHS College and Career Center?

The College and Career Center is a resource center for students and their families to access information related to their college and/or career development needs. Students can make appointments with counselors or drop in to the center as needed.

What types of services are provided for students and families through the center?

·         Access to interest inventories

·         Access to career development and occupational outlook websites

·         Access to college search websites

·         Individual appointments with counselors to discuss results of inventories and/or other college/career related information

·         Appointments to meet with college and military representatives

·         Resources are provided on college planning timelines, college visit information, and transitioning into college life

·         Resources are provided on interviewing, resumes, and assessing job readiness skills

·         Career speakers related to a variety of fields offered each month

·         Seminars on topics such as filling out the FAFSA, 1^st generation college bound students, NCAA requirements, finding scholarships, and RAI

·         Information on job shadows and internships

When is the College and Career Center open?

The College and Career Center is open from 8:30-3:30 each day. Appointments can be made before and after school as well. Students can make appointments with the counselor in the center or drop in with questions throughout the day. Students can also stop by and get a pass to meet with college or military representatives that will be visiting.

4^th-5^th Registration

14^th: Freshmen student orientation session on college/career center

25^th : Preparing for college/senior year grades, etc -Senior visits begin

25^th: H.S. Open House- Activities in College/Career Center

September

1^st-5^th: Freshmen I Have A Plan Iowa sessions

4^th: 10-12 Job Shadowing info in homeroom

11^th: 10-12 internship info in homeroom

13^th: ACT testing

18^th: 11-12 college/scholarships (videos) in homeroom
18^th: College Days promotion all day

22^nd-26^th: Sophomore I Have A Plan Iowa sessions

23^rd- 9^th grade parents-understanding GPA, preparing for college, getting involved  (6:30 p.m.)
24th : NCAA discussion before school (7:45 a.m.)

29^th- 11-12^th grade students/parents- College Planning Night/Financial aid night (6-8 pm)

October

1^st-3^rd: Senior I Have A Plan Iowa sessions
3rd: Career Speaker- Engineering (Schneider Electric)

10^th: RAI discussion 7:45 a.m.

15^th: PSAT 8 a.m.-noon

25^th: ACT testing
28th: Career speaker- Marion Police Department!!! 11:00 a.m.

29^th: small group session “attending college out of state- what to know”-  7:45 a.m.

November

Job Shadowing info through announcements beginning of the month

All month: 10^th grade group sessions scheduled during the day

10^th-14^th: Junior I Have A Plan Iowa sessions

TBD: PSAT results discussion 8 a.m.

December

15^th: Sophomore/Junior Career edge academies video in homeroom

19^th-23^rd: Freshmen I Have A Plan Iowa sessions
22nd: 8:00 a.m.- Successful Habits of High School Students in College/Career Center
23rd- 8:30 a.m.- Career speaker- International Business representative

26^th-30^th: Junior I Have A Plan Iowa sessions

26^th:  8^th grade parent night (registration) 6 p.m., College/Career Center open with activities

February

1^st of the month: Internship promotion through announcements
4th- Student speaking about Hoover Uncommon Scholar Award, 8:00 a.m.

7^th: ACT testing

9^th-13^th: Senior I Have A Plan Iowa sessions
10th- Presentation on Scholarship Essay Writing!, 8:00 a.m.

23^rd-27^th: Sophomore I Have A Plan Iowa sessions

24^th- Summer opportunities discussion, 7:45 a.m.
27th- Career Speaker: Attorney, 10:10 a.m.

March

12^th: College Days- promote staff college experiences all day

27^th: FAFSA/scholarships/preparing for paying for college- small group session, 7:45 a.m.

28th- ZAPS- ACT prep workshop

April

9th- Career Speaker- Marketing VP, at 2:45 p.m.

21st- U of Iowa campus visit
