College Planning information

There will be a panel of seniors discussing their college planning experiences on Friday 4/25 at 8:00 a.m. in the Co-Lab in the Media Center.  All students are welcome to hear advice on selecting a college, looking for scholarships and other insights on how to make the most of your college search.

Brains for Grains College Recruitment Fair

Do you have strong math and science skills? Are you a student who displays strong academic and leadership skills? If so, consider attending "Brains for Grains" College Recruitment Fair on Sunday, April 13th hosted by Kansas State University. The event will be held at The Hotel at Kirkwood Community College in the Tippie Room from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Kansas State offers the only bachelor's degree in Bakery Science & Management, Feed Science & Management and Milling Science & Management in the United States. Faculty from Kansas State's Grain Science Department and representatives from multi-national grain based companies located in the Cedar Rapids area will be on hand to discuss future career opportunities.

Civil Air Patrol coming to Linn-Mar

The Civil Air Patrol will be in the counseling office Monday morning, March 10, at 7:45 for a brief presentation. They will be available until 9:00 to answer any questions.

Money Smart Kid Essay Contest

Another great opportunity for your students - the Money Smart Kid Essay Contest is worth $1,000 to the winning essay and is open to students in grades 7-11. To qualify, students must sumbit a 300 words or less essay answering the following question:

Any investment has a certain amount of risk and an expected return. Describe to a potential investor how investing in you (such as paying for more education) will produce a return. Please discuss types of risk the investor could face.

The submission deadline is March 14, 2014.

Planning For Your Future College and Career Fair---Thursday, March 6 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Marion High School.

Representatives from several colleges and area businesses will be on hand to talk with students and parents about college and career options. Find out about corridor-area Hot Jobs, Iowa College Access Network, job shadows, internships, and Kirkwood College Credit in High School as well!  All area high school students and their parents are welcome. Seniors don't forget to check out the local scholarship spreadsheet located on this blog site or the main counseling website. Tons of new scholarships have been added and deadlines are fast approaching. Many have deadlines right after spring break, including the Linn-Mar Foundation scholarships and the Optimist scholarship. If you aren't escaping the winter weather and going somewhere warm over spring break, consider applying for FREE money towards college during your time off!

ACT Prep Workshop

Linn-Mar High School will be hosting a ZAPS ACT test-preparation seminar on 3/29/2014 from 9 am to 3 pm. A majority of students who attend a ZAPS seminar raise their ACT score by 2-4+ points or their SAT score by 50-150+ points.
The seminar will include:
- Five hours of personal instruction with an expert test specialist 
- Study materials for your student to keep, including a comprehensive study guide and six practice tests per subject
- Subject review and strategies for every question type in each section of the test
- A customized study plan
